Tourism Month 2016: Malawians Urged To Eat, Wear, Buy Local Products

Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism has appealed to Malawians to observe the months of tourism which falls in September with eating local foods and buying of locally manufactured products.


Chief Director of Tourism, Elsie Tembo, made the appeal in a statement announcing the commemorations for the 2016 World Tourism Day and Tourism Month.

“During the Tourism Month the public is also encouraged to wear Malawian clothes, eat local foods and purchase local products as part of observance of the Buy Malawi Strategy” urged Tembo

Malawi will this year join fellow United Nations World Tourism Organisations (UNWTO) member states in commemorating World Tourism Day which falls on September 27 every year.

This year, the day will be celebrated under the theme: Tourism for All-Promoting Universal Accessibility. According to the statement, this theme encourages all member states and destinations to promote accessibility to tourist facilities, attraction and services, transportation systems, information and communication channels for all including people with disabilities, children and the elderly.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Honorable Joseph Mwanamvekha is expected to officially launch the Tourism Month on September, 1, 2016 at Mchinji Community Grounds at Mchinji Boma while on September 27, 2016, the World Tourism Day wil be commemorated at Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe.

In Malawi the whole month of September was designated Tourism Month and it involves several activities aiming at creating awareness to the general public about the contribution tourism makes to the socio-economic development of Malawi and also discuss available opportunities and challenges facing the sector.


Meanwhile the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism has since encouraged members of the general public to contact the Ministry to advise of any of the tourism related events and activities they would be carrying out during the tourism month.
