WILSA-Malawi In Sensitisation Campaign On Gender Laws

Women and Law in Southern Africa-Malawi (WLSA), has rolled out an initiative of promoting gender related laws in all constituencies represented by female legislator to allow more Malawians understands those legislations.

Mzati Mbeko, National Director for WLSA-Malawi said the three gender related laws which are: Marriage, Divorce and Family Relations Act; Gender Equality Act and on Trafficking in Persons Act, are not well understood by many Malawians.

He said all 32 female MPs who on Friday evening were oriented on these legislations, will be disseminating the laws in their respective constituencies.

According to Mbeko, through the initiative, WLSA intends to encourage legislators to take laws passed in the National Assembly to their respective constituencies.

“The idea is that members of Parliament, they have to take them (laws) to their respective constituencies so that they disseminate the laws." He said

"One of the problem in Malawi is that we are very good at passing these laws but dissemination of the same laws is the problem.” He observed, “So, we took this opportunity that we have 32 female Members of Parliament, so they will take these laws to their 32 constituencies and the idea is that as they are disseminating these laws they will also enhance their visibility in their respective constituencies hoping for re-election in 2019.”

Mbeko said apart from orienting the female MPs on these laws, WLSA has also produced some simplified templates of the laws that will be used in educating people in the constituencies.

"We have simplified the laws and each MP has received a simplified template of the laws so that the message is uniform but also WLSA will also visit them in their respective constituencies to clarify some other things as they will be disseminating these laws.” he said

Apart from getting the simplified templates of the laws, WLSA through support from UN Women, has further supported each female legislator with half a million Kwacha (K500, 000) to assist them in ably disseminate the laws.
