A 34 year old cashgate convict, Caroline Savala has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for her involvement in systematic looting of Government money (Cashgate) amounting to K84 thousand in 2013.
When passing the sentence, Lilongwe High Court judge, Fiona Mwale described Savala as "trickster"
Savala was found guilty and convicted of theft and money laundering after full trial.
During the trials, Savala told the court she was dragged into the cashgate by former deputy Tourism Director, Leonard Kalonga who is also answering cashgate case, when she lended out to him her company certificate which he wanted to use when biding some construction tenders that were available at the Minister but he could not use his certificate due to work conditions.
Savala who has been insisting that she was never told that Kalonga will use the certificate for stealing Government money, also informed court that she was only promised to get a commission of 10 percent from Kalonga for lending out the company certificate.
Savala through her Carm Civil Engineering Limited never done any construction work and was earning living through selling of lipstick and some cosmetics.
