2016/17 Budget Meeting Of Parliament Meeting Ends

The Third Meeting in the 46th Session of Parliament has ended this evening after meeting for 9 consecutive weeks to consider the 2016/2017 Budget.

National Assembly meeting which began on Friday, May 20 was initially planned to end last week on Friday, July 8, 2016 but due to delays during the passing of Budget, Government decided to extend the meeting time to allow the House discuss and pass bills.

As the House was adjourning Sine Die had among others approved and passed 2016/17 National Budget amounting to K1.149 trillion on Thursday 30th June.

A total of 25 bills and one private members bill had been passed during the meeting and among the bills includes land bills, Electronic Transaction bill and Communications Bill.

The meeting was characterised also by absenteeism by members belonging to all political parties represented in the House. The development forced Leader of Opposition in the Parliament, Lazarus Chakwera and Leader of House, George Chaponda in their adjournment motion to express their disappointment and ask for swift action by the National Assembly Secretariat and political party leadership in the House to end the practice.

The next meeting of the National Assembly is expected in November this year.
