Mutharika Names New Board of Directors for 25 Statutory Corporations: Meet the List of the Appointees

The President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has appointed new Boards of Directors of Statutory Corporations following the expiry of the mandates of previous appointees.

Mutharika made the appointments with immediate effect

President Mutharika has included various Human rights activists and Civil Society leaders, the Religious leaders and other prominent in the Academia to be chairpersons of some corporations.

Among them includes; Consumer rights activist John Kapito to chair Blantyre Water Board, Human rights Activist Mr Billy Banda as Chairperson for Malawi Gaming Board (MGB)/ National Lotteries Board (NLB), and Monsignor Tamani as chairperson for Malawi Broad Casting Corporation (MBC).

A number of women from various circles have also been appointed on chairperson positions. Chiefs and Members of Parliaments are among the listed appointees and other institutions are expected to send the representative to some of the boards.

Various Government Ministry Secretaries, Comptroller of Statutory Corporations, Directors and Executive Directors, Representative of various Departments including the Chief Secretary to Government are some of the Ex- Officio’s to each statutory corporation.

Meanwhile two human rights organizations, Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) and Centre for Development of People (Cedep), have registered their “deep congratulatory message” to the recent President Peter Mutharika’s appointees.

“We view such appointments as timely not only based on the fact that the terms of those who were serving in these boards had expired but also looking at the current numerous challenges which have characterized most of these statutory corporation bodies and the nation as a whole.” Reads the statement

The statement co-signed by Gift Trapence and Timothy Mtambo executive directors for Cedep and CHRR respectively observe that over the recent years statutory corporation bodies like ESCOM, BWB, MBC, ADMARC haven’t lived up to the public expectations and as such any attempt, aimed at ensuring that sanity prevails in these bodies should be supported in the best interest of the nation.

The statement hopes that the appointees will fearlessly and selflessly discharge their roles in the best interest of the nation.

But CHRR and Cedep upon observing that amongst the Presidential appointees into these statutory corporation boards are “fellow esteemed” members of the Civil Society, questions “As to whether their inclusion in these boards is a political ploy by the current regime to silence them, cripple the civil society or not as alleged by some quarters is beyond our knowledge. However, what we know is that most of these members of the Civil Society are men and women of high competence; as such we believe that their appointments are to a greater extent based on such.”

“After all, such appointments do not necessary signal their “retirement” from Civil Society work though it may be argued in some cases that their objectivity over some issues of national interest may be comprised especially when they are to comment on issues affecting the institutions in whose board they will be sitting, or even on matters concerning the government of the day. Suffice to say, we believe that with these appointments – that is, if they stick to principles - put them in a strategically close position to influence the desired changes in these statutory bodies whose shortfalls had previously formed the bulk of their advocacy towards genuine reforms.” Reads the statement

CHRR and Cedep have promised to render necessary support to the newly appointees in the best interest of the nation and human rights for all.
