Local, international theatre groups excited with TRC Fringe Fest

As enthusiasm continue to build for the Mwezi Arts inaugural Theatre Renaissance Cabaret (TRC) international festival, local and international theatre productions performing at the event are optimistic of the festival’s potential to propel emerging talents to international stage and collaborations.

TRC is an International Theatre Festival scheduled for July 25 to 27, 2025 taking stage at the iconic Madsoc Theatre in Area 2, Kumbali Castle at Area 44 and Jazz Lounge at Four Seasons.

Emmanuel Chilombo, the director of Nkhwazi Theatre Works whose production is featured on TRC Fringe Fest said the TRC international festival offers them opportunity to showcase local stories, dialects, and artistic styles to the forefront—sharing Malawi’s rich culture with a wider audience.

Kalumo’s short film Dzuwa debuts at 9th Eastern Cape Film Festival

A short film titled Dzuwa written by a Malawian actor and director, Shafiq Kalumo was among the top 10 films that debuted at the just ended prestigious 9th Eastern Cape Film Festival on March 21 to 23, 2025 in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. 

The film was screened alongside other works by independent filmmakers, celebrating the talent and resilience of the region's cinematic storytellers.

The Gunless Soldier film premiere momentum keep rising

 

A new movie titled The Gunless Soldier, set to premiere on Friday 28 March, 2025 at Golden Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe continue to gather momentum as producers of the film shares massive support and enthusiasm from fans who can’t wait to watch the film.

A film by award winning filmmaker and actress, Joyce Mhango Chavula, is starred by renowned Malawian film actors including Ashukile Mwakisulu, Edwin Chonde, Kelvin Ngoma, Lillian Masangano, and Mphatso Chikuni.

Magodi Christian Private Secondary School in Area 23, has awarded its 26 students selected into public universities and five teachers for their outstanding performance in the last academic year.

Speaking at an award ceremony on Saturday, the Director for the school, Bishop William Madhlopa said the event was intended to acknowledge hard work and dedication of students and teachers as well as encouraging candidates waiting to seat for this year’s exams to keep working hard so that next academic year the school should send more students to university.

He expressed delight to see that the school is registering good results each year in terms of public university selection as 13 students were selected in 2023 academic year and in 2024 the number has doubled to 26.

‘’Students at this school are encouraged to work hard in class and we have qualified teachers who are dedicated and supportive to students. We teach students here. We discourage them from memorising study materials just to pass MANEB exams. This is why this year we have managed to register 26 students who have been selected to various public universities.” Said Madhlopa

He said to date, a number of students from the school have graduated from various universities and that since it started sending students to university, none has been expelled – an indication that the culture of hard work imparted at the school continue to support them at tertiary level.

Madhlopa also shared that the school runs a program that supports students from vulnerable families through tuition waiver. He therefore expressed excitement that some of the students who received awards today are those that have been on the program.

‘’Each academic year, we support 20 students from vulnerable households. This is one way of supporting the education of less privileged children in Malawi. Some of the students under this program have graduated from public universities and are now employed in public institutions and one of them is now an engineer. Additionally, over 100 children from households facing hunger, come here to eat food that we prepare.’’ Shared Madhlopa

He has since promised great rewards such as a laptop and tuition support to this years candidates who shall pass MSCE exams with points 10 and below.

Mercy Madhlopa, Head Teacher for the school said students who have been celebrated for their selection to various universities had displayed exemplary behaviour both on academic and social life. She said this resulted in good success and has since encouraged learners at the school to emulate the example of hard work and discipline.

‘’Also, I would like to encourage all students being awarded today to continue working hard at your respective universities and in courses you are studying.’’ The Head Teacher Said  

Students the awarded students have been selected to pursue various programs in universities namely; Mzuzu University, University of Malawi, MUST University, LUANAR.

Mrs. Jamu who represented parents for the awardees thanked the school management for their tireless work of shaping children and teaching the students well, which enabled the students to pass exams with flying colors and selected to university.

"We are very happy as parents for the good work you are doing to all children here and also to vulnerable students. We would like to encourage you to continue the work.’’ She said

Blessings Mhango who has been selected to Mzuzu University for Bachelors of Education Sciences expressed gratitude to teachers for helping them with total dedication to understand every lesson and enable them pass exams with good grades. 

‘’I was working very hard but also, the school played a vital role to this success. The school has dedicated teachers and the director for the school always instil discipline in us and also he makes sure that teachers are doing their work including inviting special teachers to help us in areas that we need to cover before exams.’’ Said Blessings

He has since advised learners from the school to follow school rules such as good behavirour, hard work, utilise resources well such as library and laboratories.

NASFEST International Cultural Festival offers hope to local artists

The NASFEST International Youth Cultural Festival 2025 expected to begin this Friday in Lilongwe has been described as a great platform for upcoming young creatives to connect with industry experts and learn new skills from international artists.

Malawi’s celebrated film actor, Tumpe Mtaya popularly known as Phwedo made the remarks on the sidelines of the arrival of the South Africa and Zambian groups a head of their performance at the festival slated for Friday, February 7 to Sunday, February 9, 2025 at Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe.

A group of young artists from South Africa, Siyasindisa Theatre Work has arrived in the country ahead of their performance at the NASFEST International Youth Cultural Festival 2025 slated for Friday, February 7 to Sunday, February 9, 2025 at Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe.

The festival, provides a vibrant platform for young performers to showcase their theatrical and artistic talents, encourage creative expression and cultural exchange, bringing together youths and students from different communities and secondary schools across Malawi and Southern Africa.

Mphekesela dance performance pushes creativity boundaries

A captivating theatrical dance production called Mphekesela performed by some young Malawians and a Germany dancer, Lucia Kuhn has exposed Malawi’s affluence and flair in the genre of contemporary dance.

With the dance as medium of telling visual narratives, the ten-member cast held their first premier of the dance at Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe on Wednesday and signed out of the stage on Sunday afternoon.

Pushing the boundaries of creativity, they merged aesthetics and traditional dance styles from Malawi, Africa and Western cultures.

Lilongwe Motor Show, K Motors in Ambulance Repair Project

Two local companies, Lilongwe Motor Show Ltd and K Motors have unveiled a social project that will repair ambulances for the Nkhatabay District Hospital.

The companies will finance the project through proceeds from Blantyre Motor Show, scheduled for to take place on 26th October at the Old National Bus Terminal.

Kaunjika Vendors Protesting in Lilongwe

Vendors who sell second hand clothes and shoes popularly known as Kaunjika at Tsoka market in Lilongwe are protesting against high rise of bales of the comodity from wholesalers due to new tax measures by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).

Mavuto Kampeza, who sell second hand pair of trousers at Tsoka market said the new taxes on second hand clothes have pushed prices of clothes making wholesalers selling a single bale of clothes up to Seven Hundred Thousand Kwacha (K700,000).

MEC urges media to introduce programs, messages on elections

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has challenged media houses and practitioners in the country to prepare for the upcoming September 2025 General Election, by implementing electoral radio programmes and mass media messaging around elections.

MEC Chairman, Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale made the call today at Mponela in Dowa district during the sensitization workshop on new electoral laws and holding of by-elections to the Senior Editorial managers drawn from various media houses.

The Malawi Paralympic Committee (MPC) has confirmed that the first ever Malawi Para Games will take place next week on July 27 in Lilongwe where over 100 athletes are expected to participate.

MPC president, James Chiutsi made the announcement during a press conference at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe where MPC also unveiled K2-Transformers Malawi as the official sponsor for the games.

Religious leaders lead Malawians in anti-homosexuality march

 Scores of Malawians across the country, took to the street on Thursday to express their disapproval with proposals to stop criminalization of homosexuality in the country.

Led by different religious mother bodies, the national wide march dubbed “In defense of marriage, family, and human sexuality” took place in various districts including Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu, Zomba, Chikwawa, Machinga, Mangochi and Rumphi.

The petition has asked the Malawi president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and his cabinet as well as members of parliament to reject proposals to legalize homosexuality in the country’s constitution.

Young Malawians from Light of Youth Creative Organization (LYCO) who traveled to Zambia on Thursday for the 2023 Jacaranda Children and Youth Arts Festival, are expected to perform this evening at Lusaka Playhouse in the capitol of Lusaka.

It is expected that the Malawi High Commissioner to Zambia, Margaret Constance Kamoto will be present to watch the drama and dances prepared by the Malawi troupe.

“We are set to perform this evening at 18:30, and we are excited with the presence of Malawi High Commissioner to Zambia at this event.” Confirmed James Kitchen, Executive Director of LYCO.

He said LYCO is going to showcase drama titled Nyangu and two dances – Gule Wamkulu and M’bwiza. He said Nyangu was written by Fumbani Phiri and was directed by Joyce Mhango Chavula.

The Periscope Study by UNC Project conducted between 2019 and 2022 targeting 80 participants, investigated the Adaptation of the Friendship Bench Mental Health Intervention for HIV-Infected Perinatal Women in Malawi.

MultiChoice Malawi in Antipiracy Drive

The MultiChoice Malawi has propped up its antipiracy campaign through initiative called Partners Against Piracy (PAP) which seeks to help fight piracy which currently presents a threat to the sustainability of the creative industry including broadcasting industry within Malawi.

On Friday night the company hosted a PAP symposium in the capital city, Lilongwe, which attracted various stakeholder to discuss ways to fight piracy and popularize awareness of domestic laws that criminalize the practice.

Emma Gichonge, Managing Director of MultiChoice Malawi emphasized that piracy is remains a serious crime that has a negative effect on economy hence engaging key industry stakeholders to collectively clamp down on content piracy and create awareness against content theft.

“Piracy harms investor confidence and tax revenue, and may also affect trade opportunities if Malawi is seen as a country where intellectual property is not respected and protected.” She said

Lack of knowledge about sexual and gender minorities rights among Malawians continue to impede sober conversations that protects the rights of LGBTQI+ community.

Discussions on LGBTQI+ generally ignore human rights aspects entitled to every person as most conversations center on cultural and religious values as others take step further to spread sentiments that propagates homophobia and transphobia of LGBTQI+ persons.
