Murekezi arrest |
Malawi Police have arrested the
suspected 1994 Rwandan genocide convict, Mr. Vincent Murekezi.
National Police Spokesperson,
James Kadadzera has confirmed that today police acted on Rwandan Government
request sent to Malawi Government to have Murekezi arrested and extracted to
Rwanda on genocide.
“I am confirming that it is true
that Mr. Vincent Murekezi has been arrested today.” He confirmed in a telephone
interview
He said the arrest was effected
following a letter that was sent to Malawi through office of Director of Public
Prosecution (DPP) requesting Malawi to arrest and sent him back home in
connection to genocide.
“So police have activated and
have arrested Vincent Murekezi and we will hand over everything to office of Director
of Public Prosecution for other causes of action.” He added
Murekezi has been living in Malawi and had managed to acquire two Malawian passports in 2011 and 2016. In his latest passport, Murekezi changed his name to Vincent Banda from Tanzania.
It is also alleged that Murekezi had acquired a gun with valid license although Malawi Police Service records show they denied his gun application.
Meanwhile, leader for the
concerned citizens calling for Murekezi arrest, Mr. Philip Kamangira has
welcomed the Malawi Government decision to act on the Rwanda’s wanted man.
“It is a welcome development” he reacted, adding “because this is what we have been expecting.”
But has since said as concerned
citizens they still expect that more action is going to be taken.
“Because it is not just a matter
of arresting but we proposed three things; that Mr. Murekezi has to be
arrested, then the two passports in his possession should be immediately
withdrawn and the citizenship should be ceased off but also he has to be
immediately extradited.”
The concerned citizens last week Thursday presented petition to Malawi National Assembly asking for their intervention to have Murekezi arrested and extradited back home.
