Pictures have emerged of a white man just putting on underwear, walking into Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) heading towards international passenger’s check-in counter attempting to board South African Airways.
Images believed to have been taken between Sunday and Monday morning show scantily clad young man allegedly at Cape Maclear in Mangochi checking-out of the lodge and trying to get into a taxi with his two travelling bags before leaving for KIA in Lilongwe as people standing at a distance gaze in awe.
The next images show him at KIA in the same underwear bearing colors for South African flag, standing unabashed on the check-in counters queue for the passengers going to South Africa. Pictures show people around him feeling uncomfortable being treated to such a shocking spectacle as walking with underwear in public is regarded inappropriate and naked in Malawi.
The pictures later show him standing with two police officers; one male police officer and female officer apparently questioning him.
Police at KIA have confirmed on the incident but have declined to disclose the particulars of the man although they have confided that he was on his way to South Africa and boarded South African Airways.
Airport Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Sapulain Chitonde said, the passenger arrived in a taxi at the airport in underwear at around 11 am on Monday but police quickly called him for questioning where they advised him to put on clothes before leaving for South Africa.
According to Chitonde, the man whom police have only identified as an English speaker, apologised for his conduct but he told officers questioning him that he decided to only putting on underwear because of very hot conditions he experienced in the country.
The man was later spotted putting on his decent clothes and went back for the exit formalities.
Some Malawians who have seen the pictures currently circulating on social media have questioned the conduct of the man and others suggest that he was acting under the influence of weed commonly known as Marijuana or Chamba (in vernacular language) and that he might have been high when he decided to travel almost 140 kilometre distance from Mangochi to Lilongwe in underwear.
Refutal; He's A Mad Swimmers Team Member
However, there is another post circulating on social media carrying a different side of the story behind this half naked walk.
The post claim that the man was one of the Mad swimmers team that came into the country to raise money for children and that he broke the record. The post further allege that it was a side bet made to walk in underwear so that if he had managed to cross immigration he would have picked up 12 thousand Rands extra for the charity.
The refutal post caption reads; “So there is this picture circulating about this innocent man and the caption is he SMOKED WEED! WELL HE DIDN’T SMOKE ANY WEED…
Hes part of the Mad swimmers team that came to raise money for children. A group swam across lake Malawi. He broke the current record. It was side bet made. If he managed to cross the immigration he would have picked up r12, 000 extra for the charity. No Malawian gold involved. PLEASE CAN WE STOP DEGRADING THIS INNOCENT MAN”
