Malawians who welcomed President Peter Mutharika this evening at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA), and other thousands who glued their eyes to the live telecast of his arrival from United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) were surprised with his use of left hand when waving people and greeting officials as his right hand remained, crossed and unmoved.

A Qatar Executive Jet carrying Mutharika whose prolonged stay in America sparked a lot of rumours about his health landed around 15: 45 hours, emerged at 15:52 hours looking in good health.

His appearance attracted loud cheers from huge crowd that came to welcome their President, However, some have spotted his unusual use of left hand when waving the crowd as well as his unmoving right hand which was kept waist-crossed as he inspected guard of honor and when greeting officials.

Few minutes upon his arrival at KIA, President Mutharika who was welcomed by the Vice President, Saulos Chilima, Government officials and the Democratic Progressive Party officials, jumped into his car without speaking to the crowd but continued waving the crowd at the airport while inside his car.

For the past two weeks, Malawi social media has been amassed with reports alleging that President Mutharika had brain tumour surgery while in America and could not return home immediately after UNGA meeting had ended as doctors had advised him to remain in hospital until recovery.

However, Government Spokesperson, Honorable Malison Ndau refuted the reports saying the Malawi leader was “enjoying very robust health and is continuing to carryon his duties” and the Information Minister further dispelled the rumour saying Mutharika was meetingnumber of individuals one by one hence extension of his stay in America.

Mutharika left Malawi on 16th September this year for United States of America to attend the 71st United Nations General Assembly and his return today marks almost a month stay in America.

Following his prolonged stay in America, Malawians have been demanding whereabouts of their president until when Government officially announced that he would return today.

During UNGA meetings, President Mutharika had among others attended to several official governments engagements and also received a ‘Medal of Honor for Development’ from the African Leadership Magazine.
