Malawi Congress Party President (MCP) and Leader of Opposition Parties in Parliament, Lazarus Chakwera has asked Government to drop all cases answering former President Bakili Muluzi and allow former President Joyce Banda come back home.
Chakwera was speaking when making statement before the adjournment of the National Assembly meeting Sine Die on Friday evening.
He observed that it is clear that ten years down the line, Government seem to have no evidence against Muluzi and that continuing with the case will drain public resources.
MCP leader further said fleeing of Joyce Banda from the country is a typical example of continued mistreatment that former Presidents including Muluzi continue to face in the country.
“I call for a national conversation on how profitable it is for this nation to continue wasting resources for over 10 years trying a former president and failing to conclude the case. Former president Bakili Muluzi deserves better.” He said, “Also, let former President Joyce Banda come home and be taken care of.”
Chakwera then called for an end to speculation and insensitivity saying Malawians should not be afraid to make necessary changes that enable “us to walk in the light and expose dark imaginations.”
In an interview Chakwera said if the Government is failing to conclude Muluzi case then there is no need to waste public resources by continuing with the case.
He expressed that arrests of former Presidents must stop in this country; “Let us settle these things. As a country we could even be calling curses upon ourselves because of manner in which we treat our elders.” He added
At the very beginning, the Leader of Opposition also demanded Government to drop treason case of his two party legislators, Jessie Kabwila and Peter Chakhwantha.
“As we rise today, I would like to put on record that am not happy to see our legislators; Honorable Jessie Kabwila and Honorable Peter Chakhwantha, leave the chamber from time to time to report to the Police on the case that should have been dropped. We continue to waste precious time and money on non-profitable exercises of this nature which serve nothing but political egos.” Lamented Chakwera
He among other things emphasised independence of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, the Auditor General and Parliament as well as review of Electoral reforms saying these are so critical at this time.
“As opposition we shall continue to push for legislation to make sure that the fight against corruption and mismanagement of Malawi finances is won. Let’s not just sing about reforms lets act them out, let us not just pass motions in this House, lets us pass laws that make possible a better and prosperous Malawi.”
He even mentioned that the year of hunger like this, there was no need for Government to include the budget allocation for the procurement of vehicles for the presidential convoy in the just passed 2016/17 National Budget.
