Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi said China will continue to support Malawi to gain full economic independence.
Honorable Wang Yi, was speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Sunday during an audience with Malawi President Peter Mutharika.
Wang said Chinese Government is committed to bring investments in five areas of Agriculture, Infrastructure, Health, Human Resource and industrialization.
“Our support in these five areas we are going to advance our mutual cooperation to a new height.” He said
He also announced during a press briefing he jointly held with Malawi Foreign Affairs Minister, George Chaponda after closed session with President Mutharika that China will assist Malawi with US$9.23 million towards averting hunger in the country following the adverse climate conditions which Malawi faced early 2015.
Malawi President Peter Mutharika said when welcoming the Minister that the visit “demonstrates strong bonds of friendship and cordial cooperation existing between our two brotherly countries.”
He said since December 2007 when bilateral relation was established, Malawi has benefited immensely from Chinese Government in areas of infrastructure, disaster management and risk reduction, agriculture, education, defense and security.
He among others noted number of infrastructure development which Chinese Government has implemented in Malawi including Parliament Building, Chitipa-Karonga road and loan projects including Malawi University of Science and Technology, magnificent Five Star Hotel and Presidential Vilas.
“China has remained a good development partner” said Mutharika
He also noted that China assisted Malawi in the disaster relief and risk reduction with US$500 thousand under the China-Malawi-UNDP Cooperation Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Project.
He further mentioned that China donated US$600 thousand towards flood relief efforts and also thanked China for number of projects earmarked for Malawi which he expressed hope that their implementation will transform Malawi.
“I would like to reiterate my Government’s commitment to continue cooperating with China for our mutual benefit. We remain resolved to consolidate our cooperation with China at bilateral, regional and international levels” said Mutharika
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, George Chaponda said during the briefing that the coming of the Chinese Minister was to “promote our economic independence.”
“China is a friend indeed” said Chaponda noting that the bilateral relation with China has seen Malawi welcoming major infrastructure developments across the country.
